A GROUP of veteran golfers are planning to revive the sport at the Nadi Airport Golf Club course at New Town.
Led by former president of the club Chandra Segran Pillay, golfers including captain Ambhika Prasad, Balram Kistaya and Vinod Chauhan are keen to get the course back to playable condition and tee off with the weekly competitions soon.
The last tournament held at the New Town course was several months ago.
Pillay said they would first hold a special general meeting on Sunday to form a committee to see what plans could be put into place to revive golf at the venue.
He said the condition of the course was not good and a lot of maintenance was required to get it back into shape.
“Finance is a major factor but there are some keen golfers who are willing to invest to improve the facilities,” Pillay said.
“We hope to start work from the back nine and then slowly get the course fully functional. We are targeting to get the old members back and there are some new players wishing to take up the sport.
“We want to start off with about 30 members and see the number grow after that. Sponsorship will come provided when the facilities are up to date.”
The Nadi Airport Golf Club has produced many champion golfers such as former world No.1 Vijay Singh, the Chand brothers, Dinesh, Salesh and Mukesh all of whom are based overseas together with Anuresh Chandra.
