Tongan set-piece coach helps Lautoka

THE Tropik Pine Lautoka Maroons’s campaign for this weekend’s Vodafone Vanua Challenge against Nukuloa is boosted with the timely technical assistance provided by Auckland High Performance coach Sam Ward.The Tonga Rugby Union set-piece coach was invited by Lautoka to further develop the players and host sessions for club officials.

Head coach Osea Umuumulovo said coaches and players had learned many valuable lessons from Ward.

He said the Kiwi rugby expert focused on improving basic elements of rugby such as skills development, catch and pass alignments, under and over-lines, ball placement and tracking with balls.

“This is some initiatives that the union was working on, and is something that needs to be done to improve our performances if we are to achieve our goal and that is to reach the major union level,” said Umuumulovo .

Ward, who arrived on Sunday, is camping with the players for one week. He is also the set-piece coach for Tonga and is expected to leave our shores this weekend to join
the Tonga rugby team.

Umumulovo thanked the fi nancial support provided by the team’s new sponsor.

Lautoka is still unbeaten after three rounds of competition and will face Nanukuloa at Nadovu Park on Saturday at 3pm.

Meanwhile, in other Vanua Cup games this weekend, Yasawa will travel to Vatukoula while Tavua to host neighbour Ba.

Serua faces Ra while Bua to host Cakaudrove. Neighbours Tailevu and Northland will battle at Gatward Park, Macuata to travel to Ovalau and Northern Bulls to host Nasinu.
