Malo’s tourney a success

THE LongRun (Fiji) – sponsored 18 holes stroke championship for the late Maciu Malo Memorial Trophy produced fireworks at the Lautoka Golf Club course last Saturday.

As a three-hole play-off was required to decide the overall winner, national rep and Xavier College teacher Asish Chand and sponsor Ram Reddy, were both tied on 73 gross after the regulation 18 holes.

Reddy emerged victorious in the play-off to record his first major win of his golfing career.

A jubilant Reddy said his late father, Ram Reddy Sr, was a pioneer member of the club during the Colonial Sugar Refining ( CSR) era of the 1930s whereby membership was mostly restricted to expatriates.

LGC executive Raymond Singh commended Reddy for his fantastic win in rubbing shoulders with the top golfers on the day, as well as the sponsorship to make it a very successful tournament. Plantation Island Resort golf course designer Ananda Madhawan accounted for the overall nett prize on nett 64.

Young Lawrence Low of Denarau Golf Club claimed the A-grade title on 70, followed by Shiva Rajan and Manwal Kumar posting 71 and 72 respectively.

Inform Adeel Khan nabbed the B-grade title on 67, Dennis Singh was second on 68 while Gaffar Ali finished in third position on 69.

Young Alex Qiokata grabbed the C-grade title on 67 with Sajid Khan second on a countback from Azahar Khan with 68.

Sunny Kim, took out the ladies overall gross title on 78, with Bella Cho, who won the overall nett title on 74. Dr Zen Low was declared the winner of the consistency prize.

The Fiji Times Editor, Fred Wesley, during the awards presentation, fittingly rewarded the overall champion with the prize and the late Maciu Malo Memorial Trophy.

Wesley thanked the club’s executives for organising the tournament, which would become an annual event, to help look after Malo’s family of two daughters and widow.
