Log truck drivers ‘must clear fines’

Logging truck drivers who face hefty fines for overloading will need to pay their fines before they can operate again, says Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

He made the clarification to more than 400 pine landowners who were part of a talanoa session during a recent security bonus payout at Drasa, Lautoka earlier this week.

A landowner who also owns a logging truck business asked for the prime minister’s assistance towards an overloading fine penalty ticket issued to him by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) two years ago. He said he was told by the authority that he would only be allowed to operate his logging truck business once his fine was paid.

He raised this issue to the prime minister’s attention hoping some solution would be provided.

“We have had meetings with the LTA on this issue after it was brought to light last year and I hope to clarify with you that you will need to pay off your fines before you operate again,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“It is important that you understand your trucks will only be allowed to run again once all dues and fines are paid accordingly.”
