Weightlifting Fiji is mapping out plans for its elite weightlifters for the coming sporting calendar which includes the Commonwealth Games.
Head coach Henry Elder said the window for qualification to the games in Birmingham, England, would start with three important events.
“The next preparation phase is another opportunity for the weightlifters to qualify to the 2022 CG,” he said.
“The qualification system is such that we have to gain valuable points in every competition we participate in. The level of competition in each international event determines the total points accumulated for respective athletes.”
Elder said the three major tournaments WF would be eyeing to cement qualification to the 2022 Birmingham Games would be the International Weightlifting Federation’s-sanctioned Junior World Championships and the Youth World Championships including the Pacific Mini Games in Saipan, Northern Marianas.
“The events are a higher level of competition, hence the possibility of gaining high points is in store for the weightlifters because any competition that’s recognised by the IWF is a qualifying event.”
He said participation in the JWC and YWC would be conducted through virtual competitions.
The JWC would be held in Hersonissos in Greece from May 2-10 while the YWC would be hosted in Leon in the Mexican state of Guanajuato from June 11-18.
The Pacific Mini Games would be held in Saipan, Northern Marianas from June 17-25.
