National 7s coach Gareth Baber says Fiji is lucky to be able to organise and play in a sevens tournament while the rest of the world is in lockdown.
Speaking after the final of the opening tournament of the 2021 Super 7s Series at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
Baber said the tournament gave our rugby players the opportunity to test their skills against the best 7s players in Fiji as they continued their buildup towards their Olympics sevens gold medal defence.
“Yes, we’re very lucky here in Fiji that we can organise a quality tournament like this while the rest of the world is in lockdown,” Baber said.
“I believe we’re fortunate because this keeps our boys occupied.”
Baber said the next tournament would be held in Nadi next month.
Police Blue are the first winners of the series as they defeated Raiwasa Taveuni 7-5 in a very close game yesterday.
National 7s squad member Teri Tamani scored the winning try in the first half which was converted by Waisea Nacuqu for a 7-0 lead at half time.
Raiwasa came back to score an unconverted try in the second half, but Police held on until the final whistle.
In the third-place playoff, Barbarian Brothers beat Ratu Filise 7-0.
