Assistance only for those affected

A LOT of misinformation has been circulating about the Homes-CARE assistance, says Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa. She said the assistance was open only to those affected by Severe Tropical Cyclone Josie and Severe Tropical Cyclone Keni, and not to the public.
“I have received a lot of calls as well from people in Lautoka who are asking whether the assistance is for everybody,” she said.
“They think that Government is just handing out money for nothing and I had to explain to them that this assistance is for people who suffered damage to their houses or household items during Severe TC Josie and Severe TC Keni.
“We are only looking at those damage.”
Under the Homes-CARE programs, households with an annual income of under $50,000 who lost items in their homes or whose homes were damaged or destroyed in the cyclones can apply to receive prepaid electronic cards to purchase materials to repair their homes and replace possessions that were lost or badly damaged.
People who had their homes destroyed or suffered severe structural damage qualify for $7000 in relief assistance. The allocated funds range from $1000 to $7000.
