THE Fijian Teachers Association’s newly appointed general secretary plans to use his teaching experience to raise awareness on issues faced by teachers.

Retired primary school teacher Paula Manumanunitoga said he hoped to lift the standards of services offered to its members.

He took over the role from former general secretary Peni Delaibatiki six weeks ago.

“When I speak on the education sector , I know what i am talking about because I’ve been through the system,” he said.

“ It is my duty to fight for teachers rights and there are a lot issues reported to us on a daily basis regarding their working conditions, this is where we stand .

“We need to lift the standards of teaching in our education sector because this is where the future generation of this nation are bred.”

Mr Manumanunitoga said the association consists of 4000 members including lectures from the University of the South Pacific and the Fiji National University.
