WEIGHTLIFTING Fiji is looking for more weight-lifters to join the sport and represent Fiji at international competitions in future. Weightlifting Fiji general secretary Ritesh Ratiram said they were looking for the next generation of lifters.
“We are looking for new lifters between the ages of 16 and 19 to prepare for the 2019 IWF Junior World Championship, which Fiji will host in Suva, in June 2019. “We are also looking for lifters from between the ages of 13 and 16. Weightlifting Fiji wants new lifters up to the age of 25. You may be a late bloomer, but many athletes who start late, go a long way.”
Weightlifting Fiji won a gold medal through Eileen Cikamatana and a bronze medal from Apolonia Vaivai at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia last month.
“We are calling school children, rugby players and anyone interested in the sport of weight-lifting for all age groups to come to the National Fitness Centre, adjacent to ANZ Stadium in Suva on Saturday between 9am – 12 noon to have a go,” Ratiram said.
“WF is aiming to build a strong foundation for the sport and give opportunities to the youth of Fiji for sporting greatness.”
