Week-long workshop targets Pacific food and nutritional security

A WEEK-long workshop ‘Enhancing Seed Systems for Resilience, Livelihoods, Food and Nutritional Security in the Pacific’ in Nadi next week will discuss the impact climate change has on food.
Climate change is a major threat to agricultural development and sustainable food security in the region.
Rising sea levels along with threats from natural disasters threaten the existence of some islands and communities.
Declining land productivity due to spiralling of soil fertility, pests and diseases and low genetic diversity further threaten food security of the Pacific communities.
Seed security has been identified as vital for sustainable agricultural production, particularly in building resilient farming systems and healthy communities.
Agriculture Minister Inia Seruiratu is scheduled to open the workshop at the Novotel Nadi next week Monday.
The workshop is organised by the Pacific Community (SPC) with funding from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
SPC member countries and global and regional donor and technical partners including DFAT, UN World Food Program, Bioversity International and World Potato Centre (CIP) are expected to attend the weeklong consultation workshop.
